Sponsor-A-Grave at the Pinehurst & San Sebastian Cemeteries

The West Augustine Improvement Association is proud to announce the Pinehurst and San Sebastian Sponsor-A-Grave Campaign and the Pinehurst & San Sebastian GoFundMe Campaign to raise funds for new granite gravestones and upkeep at two of the oldest African American cemeteries in Florida. When WAIA founder, local West Augustine teacher Nellie Meade, first started the organization back in 1956, one of her goals was to help with the upkeep of the black cemeteries in St. Augustine. Without any local owners, the African American cemeteries were more or less abandoned with grass growing chest-high and weeds taking over. Since WAIA was able to gain ownership of the Pinehurst and San Sebastian cemeteries, a continuous effort has been made to keep the grass cut throughout the year, but the task is enormous for a small, volunteer-run organization with very limited funds. Pinehurst and San Sebastian Cemeteries Cleanup Day 2023 Come join us for the 2023 Fall Pinehurst and San Sebastian Cemeteries Restoration Day on Saturday, October 14th, from 8 am - 12 noon . It will be a wonderful community event where we honor those who came before us by cleaning up around the individual graves and cleaning headstones in two of the oldest African American cemeteries in Florida. Help Save the Lost Graves at Two of Florida’s Oldest African American Cemeteries - GoFundMe Campaign to Raise Money For Gravestones

Photo of the new gravestone with the old grave marker and Ms. Dodie and Lisa Raising funds to replace lost grave markers at the Pinehurst and San Sebastian cemeteries is of utmost importance for the West Augustine Improvement Association as many grave markers are crumbling, getting a little weaker with every storm, and as they crumble another name is lost. While more than 200 graves are either unmarked or about to lose their grave markers at two of the oldest African American cemeteries in Florida, the initial goal for this campaign is to raise funds for 50 granite gravestones to replace some of the grave markers that are either lost or in danger of degrading beyond recognition before the names are lost forever.
